Bike in Venice; the city that lives on water

  • This great tour of Venice starts in Vicenza and loops like a pearl necklace through the Veneto region. The area is filled with valleys, lagoons, rivers as well as great architecture, including the unique buildings and bridges of Venice and the famous Palladian Villas of the Veneto (Ville Venete). The spectacular 15th to 19th century Palladian villas are scattered all over the Venetian plain (numbering about 5000!). The 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio designed many of these. You'll soon notice he preferred the classic Roman style. The route will take you along many Prosecco vineyards and you’ll have ample opportunity to taste some wine!

Beginning to bike in Venice, you’ll cycle on narrow islands along the coast and take a ferry to Chioggia, a major fishing port on the Adriatic. Padova (Padua) is known for its frescoes by Giotto and the University of Padua, one of Europe’s oldest (1222) and where Galileo was once a professor. Padua is one of the most important art cities in Italy and also the economic capital of Veneto. To complete the loop you’ll head back to Vicenza to finish your magnificent bike tour in Italy; one of the most historic and artistic regions in Europe!

Don’t forget that Tripsite also provides amazing bike tours in Italy along with 100s of other bike tours in Europe.

Day 8: Departure from Vicenza

*All distances are approximate.

DAY 1: Vicenza
Individual arrival in Vicenza, known as the "City of Palladio". Palladio is a famous architect from the 16th century, whose famous works are located in the city, namely the Basilica and the Villa Rotonda. From Vicenza, you can easily reach Venice by train in 50 min. time. The night's accommodations will be in a hotel within the city center close to the train station.

DAY 2: Vicenza - Bassano del Grappa, 25 mi. (40 km)
You will cycle from the valley to the beginning of the Alps until you come to Marostica, a very picturesque town with a nice Castle and the popular Chess Square (a live game with human chess pieces is still played every September on even numbered years). The Grappa Museum is also certainly worth a visit. Further along the way, you will reach Bassano del Grappa, a charming old town on the Brenta River crossed by a marvelous wooden bridge.Via a trek from Vicenza to the base of the Alps is the town of Bassano del Grappa, known for its spirit. Founded in the Middle Ages, Bassano del Grappa is famous for its covered wooden Bridge, the Ponte Vecchio or Ponte degli Alpini, designed by Palladio in 1569. It is tradition, mostly on the weekends, to have an aperitif at the bridge and for the lovers, a bacin d’amor (love kiss). Visit the famous Palladio Villa on your way to Treviso along the Sile River.

DAY 3: Bassano del Grappa - Treviso, 38 mi. (60 km)
You enter Asolo, which presents us the only real uphill section of our ride. The downhill run takes you to the land of Prosecco vineyards and on to Maser. It is possible to shorten the stage by 25 km by taking the train from Montebelluna to Treviso, with a change in Castelfranco.

DAY 4: Treviso - Venezia (Mestre), 13/28 mi. (20/45 km)
Leaving Treviso behind you, follow the course of the River Sile up to Casale. At the end of the trip Venice awaits you for an evening among canals and narrow streets. Accommodation in Mestre; a supplement applies for lodging in Venice.

DAY 5: Venezia (Mestre) - Chioggia, 22 mi. (35 km)
Leaving Mestre this morning, you head into Venice cycling across the 4 km bridge, “della Libertà”, then to Tronchetto harbor. From here you take a ferry along the canal Giudecca to Lido. This is the most exciting day, pedalling on two narrow islands that divide the sea from the lagoon: Malamocco and the island of Pellestrina.

DAY 6: Chioggia - Padova, 34 mi. (55 km)
You will be pedalling along the two rivers that carried trade in and out of Venice in this area centuries ago: Bacchiglione and Brenta. You continue on to Stra, famous for the majestic Villa Pisani. On arrival in Padova, you will find the great basilica dedicated to St. Anthony, the historic Caffè Pedrocchi, and Prato della Valle.

DAY 7: Padova - Vicenza, 38 mi. (60 km)
The Bacchiglione River points the way out of the the city and you reach Costozza, a little town at the foot of the Berici hills. The bike path passes in front of Villa Rotonda the most famous of the Palladian villas. Just before entering Vicenza you see the Villa Valmarana ai Nani with its marvellous frescoes by Tiepolo.

DAY 8: Vicenza
Your bike tour in Venice will end after breakfast.

We were doing the tour "Around Venice". We did not get to finish our tour due to unusual weather, as we had heatstroke on the second day of cycling during an unprecedented heatwave. We continued by train and bus. Therefore, I feel we cannot really make a recommendation about the cycling part of this tour. We were very disappointed as we have never been unable to complete a tour before this. All other aspects of the tour and staff involved along the way were excellent. Our bikes were picked up by the tour company, so we did not have to worry about getting around with them when we weren't feeling well. Hotels were great, and Italy has the best ice cream on the planet! (And due to the heat, we ate quite a bit.) Fortunately it is very easy and inexpensive to get around by bus and train, and we had lots of time in each lovely town to rest and recover, while exploring. This is a really beautiful part of the world.

The breathtaking scenery, cities wine and food of Veneto were the most memorable parts.
